National Honor Society

Sponsor Email(s): seanwalter@wsdr4.org, jenniferhess@wsdr4.org
Room: 506
Meeting Times: Thursday During Gold Time and Before School
We do a lot!! This varies from year-to-year. Basically, though, our NHS officers create, organize, and promote service opportunities both within our school community and throughout the community at large; students commit and promise to uphold the highest standards of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Some examples include: running concessions for Holt sporting events, Lids for Kidz, and supporting the needs of our local parks and recreation department, along with several food pantries and animal shelters.
Mission Statement: "National Honor Society (NHS) membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character." I've always held the position that NHS creates the type of people and citizens our society needs the most; having a dedicated community of kids committed to high levels of scholarship, leadership, and a commitment to service provides a sobering perspective of how helping and contributing can truly change our community and our society for the better. Kids who join NHS graduate with a sense of accomplishment, greatly improved leadership and communication skills, and with the confidence to lead a productive life. NHS is for a wide range of kids--for those who desire leadership opportunities, the club is run by student-selected officers, which is an organic and rewarding process as the club 'hands the torch' off to each new group of upperclassmen leaders who continue to grow and change the trajectory of the club as time goes on. It's a solid group of kids year in and year out.
To join: Membership is by invitation. Each year, all sophomores and juniors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 are invited to join. There is an application process which accompanies the invitation, and students must also have two teacher recommendations which accompany the application. The NHS sponsors, along with an NHS panel of teachers, deliberate on applicants, and then our officers deliver membership acceptance. Members are formally inducted into NHS in May of each year.
