Two Seniors Selected as National Merit Semifinalists
Timberland High School is proud to announce that Miles McCabe and Maddox Riley have been selected as Semifinalists in the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
In addition, Carter Morgan was named to the list of National Merit Commended Students
These students entered the program by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) last fall and are among the 16,000 highest-scoring test takers (less than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors) who now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for over 6,870 National Merit Scholarships, worth nearly $26 million, that will be offered next spring.
McCabe has a weighted GPA of 4.238, scored a 34 on the ACT, and is ranked 16th in his class. He is a three-year member of the Timberland varsity tennis team, and was selected for the Missouri Scholars Academy. McCabe’s intended major is mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering.
Riley has a weighted GPA of 4.364, scored a 34 on the ACT, is ranked fourth in his class and was recognized as an AP Scholar with Honor. He is a four-year member of the cross country team, is the distance team captain of the track and field team, and has competed at the state championship in both sports. Riley is a member of the programming club, has participated in math club and chess club and attended Missouri Scholars Academy. His intended major is computer science and mathematics.
To become finalists, the semifinalists must submit an extensive scholarship application that includes a strong academic record and an account of their participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and any honors or awards. About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to be named finalists, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
