Nutrition News

The WSD Child Nutrition Department has been hard at work planning new, delicious and nutritious options for school meals. The WSD Board of Education voted unanimously earlier this year to opt out of the National School Lunch Program in an effort to improve meal offerings and increase the number of students who eat breakfast and lunch in our school cafes. What can you expect with the changes? Elementary students will see more consistency with their menus with their top-selling favorites on each day as well as some new and exciting entrees that we can’t wait for you to try. Secondary students can look forward to a college-type cafeteria experience with specialty lines that have all of their favorites, as well as some brand new items that we think they will love. The District will still continue to offer free and reduced priced meals to those who qualify and the emphasis will continue to be to provide every student access to nutritious, well-balanced meals each day. By opting out, the Child Nutrition Department will not be bound by the excessive requirements around calories, sodium and whole grains which will result in many new, delicious (but still nutritious!) options for students. We can’t wait for you to see – and TASTE – the transformation to our school cafes! For a complete list of Frequently Asked Questions, visit:
